Three Products You Need to Fight Dry Skin During The Winter

Winter is here, despite our feeble attempts to keep it at bay. The time of year has come for big coats, warm scarves, apple cider and hot chocolate, cold air and an increased heat bill. Though not everything about winter is bad, like hot chocolate, I think the one thing that most of us dread is the cold, sometimes freezing, air.

The cold can wreak havoc on our skin if we aren’t prepared. Luckily, there ways to winterize your routine and stop old man winter from turning you into a dry bag of bones. I have oily/combination skin. So, while I’m usually fighting oil most of the year, I get really dry during this time and have to find a perfect balance.

The first thing you need is a hand cream. I don’t know about you, but I hate dry hands. I always carry some sort of hand lotion in my purse, but as the months get colder, I need one that has more moisturizing properties. I also get really bad eczema on my hands during the winter, so going without a hand cream is not an option. I think our hands are one of the parts of our bodies that we don’t really pay attention to and tend to neglect, but they can be the first things to show age and lose moisture, especially in the winter. A good hand cream will keep them in tip top shape and it’s a good way to pamper them.

The next think you need is a sleeping mask. I don’t have to use these that often, but when my skin it just a dry mess, they are extremely effective. This is a great option if you have naturally dry skin all year. I can only imagine the flakes brought on by the cold weather. I haven’t really seen any at drugstore, but they have great options at Sephora and Ulta. With a sleeping mask, you just put it on when you’re about to go to sleep and wash it off in the morning. I did this and when I woke up, my skin was extremely soft and all of my dryness had vanished. I felt like a new woman.

The third thing you need in your winter life is a good body scrub. Yes. Who doesn’t love a good body scrub? I know you know about them. I know you’ve seen them. You probably own a few, right? Well, you should! Exfoliation is key to smooth skin, especially in the winter. The cold air causes dry patches and flakes that build up and gives you skin like an alligator. No one wants that. Body scrubs are an easy way to give yourself baby soft skin at home without going to a spa.

There’s no better feeling than putting on a thick, moisturizing lotion after using a body scrub in the shower, then getting under the covers.

You will feel like a million bucks, and you will sleep like a baby. You don’t even have to buy one. They’re so easy to make at home. All you need is sugar or salt to be the exfoliator, and an oil of your choice. Mix them together and you have your own homemade body scrub. It will literally save your skin this winter.

Of course, all of these tips can be used throughout the year. I just find them to be especially helpful when the weather turns cold. They should work for all skin types. I would just be mindful of formulas and ingredients if your skin is sensitive or acne-prone, like me. Ciao!
