Queer Eye Returns Revamped and Fabulously New

Netflix has been producing more popular and viral content with the release of new shows, movies and documentaries. One show that has been sweeping the world is Netflix’s Queer Eye, which was originally made in the early 2000s. It focuses on spreading awareness for the LGBTQ plus community while giving back to people all over Georgia.

The group of guys who lead the show are known as the Fab Five and each has a specific quality that they bring to the show and it participants. All of their jobs teach the importance of self-care and press the fact that taking care of yourself isn’t something to overlook and or avoid. The Fab Five is always telling their participants how worthy they are of self-care and the love of the people around them. These five guys, in my opinion, produce the kind of positivity we need on television, especially now.

The original Queer Eye was important for its time but was catered more toward straight men and weaving away from LBGT stereotypes. It had many of the same aspects the current run of the show has now, but the conversations have changed and so has its audience. The current run has added conversations on how religion views homosexuality and features participants who are transgender.

It shows just how much our country has changed in just over a decade, but it also shows how much farther we all need to go. Queer Eye is a show that evolves just as much as its audience and is constantly trying to be the first to start the conversation in a light-hearted manner. The Fab Five are not just hosts or characters like the previous Queer Eye. They are putting their own stories and feelings into each episode.

My favorite Fab Five member is Antoni because I think in a group of extremely dominating personalities he is quieter and reserved. He focuses on the food portion of the show and is in charge of showing the participants that cooking is a form of self-care and can easily be learned. Each recipe is simple and the audience watching Queer eye can make it in their own home.

Karamo, one of the other Fab Five members is a therapist and in charge of the cultural aspect of the show and often choose to dig deep into the participants lives. He helps bring them out of their comfort zone and work through any residing issues they may have from their past or their present. He shows them healthy ways to work through anxiety, lack of motivation and helps them discovery a bit more joy in their lives.

In the first episode, the Fab Five created such a bond with the participant Tom, that he has since been on social media to praise and thank them for their help. They inspired him to go after what he wants and to fall in love with not only his ex-wife but with himself. It created a moment of pure joy that viewers were able to follow along with and enjoy.

With what is happening in our country and in our world, it is important that we have media that is light-hearted, informative and positive. It reminds us that we are all important and deserve to be loved and taken care of. In some ways it seems silly that all this comes from a Netflix series about five guys giving makeovers and changing lives; but each episode has at least one moment where you can relate and feel with the cast.

Although, at some points, the show can be simplistic and over the top, the premise of the show is to put more good out into the world. The audiences have fallen completely in love with the Fab Five and that is primarily what makes the show so popular. The conversations between the five guys and between the participants shift between scripted and genuine but each still holds an important lesson.

Originally, I watched the first episode of season one and couldn’t get into it but after picking it up again and giving it a real try, I loved it. Shows today are full of dramatics and shock value, which I will not deny that I love, but it feels almost like a relief to watch real people being true to themselves and as genuine as they can be to their audience.

Queer eye is a show that everyone should watch, or at least try to watch, once in their life because it brings forth important conversation and genuine fun. Everyone loves a makeover, why not watch one that has the potential to give someone their life back or helps them get a new outlook on life?
