Daisy Jones & The Six: A Must Read [REVIEW]

Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author of the fiction book, Daisy Jones & The Six, takes you on a journey back to the 1970s, where there are drugs, sex, and rock n’ roll. It starts with Daisy Jones, a young girl who parties until morning, a passionate singer and songwriter, what is most captivating about her, is her looks. Then the story drifts to Billy Dunne, the lead guitarist and member of the up and rising rock band, The Six. Dunne is an attractive young man, who loves to party, who loves to be the center of attention and who is a bit hard to figure out, a bit like Daisy.

Daisy Jones & The Six is a work of fiction that doesn’t follow the basic book outline, as in having chapters and whatnot. Jenkins Reid made the book outline look like an interview and documentary. Her book didn’t have a deep meaning; it was more of giving a glimpse of what rock n’ roll looks like in the 1970s. She gives us two main characters and goes into depth about their lives and how they came to be Daisy Jones & The Six. Daisy’s and Billy’s stories give us a feeling of heartbreak, love, and anxiety because you understand why their lives are the way it is. All in all, this book is about the struggle of being a young adult and growing up in front of people having to deal with one’s struggles and demons.

If you enjoy books that involve music, drama, a bit of romance, or the whole aspect of what a rock n’ roll band from the ’70s is and does, this might be the book for you. Daisy Jones came from parents who don’t care about what she does or where she goes and struggles with understanding what love is. She has recorded other people’s songs and made it into an album, but she wants to broaden her career and horizon, and write her songs for her album. Though she is passionate about her singing and writing, she finds herself in bad relationships with men, but she struggles a lot with pills. Billy has his share of struggles, he’s addicted to drugs, he doesn’t know if he is ready to embark in the boat of parenthood, he finds himself in a situation where he has a crush on Daisy. Billy’s wife has a feeling that something is happening on tour and confronts him about it; Billy then swears to his wife that he will get the help he needs and will devote himself to his little growing family.

Jenkins Reid’s book, Daisy Jones & Six, was the first book that caught my attention because of the brief context that it provided, and that was enough for me to order it. Her voice and her style of writing were astonishing; there were different characters throughout the book; somehow, I was able to form a face to all of them. Usually, it gets overwhelming when there’s a lot of characters in a book. Each of her characters had their voice and personality, to the point where I was able to imagine them and what each of them felt. The words that Jenkins Reid used wasn’t hard to understand; she did an excellent job of finding the right words and expressions to use throughout the book. In a way, she was able to make the readers feel as though they were in the book. 

Daisy Jones & The Six’s characters each had their personality and voice. Still, the two characters that most definitely are memorable are Daisy and Billy. Their story is what drove this book to be a great work of fiction. Each of their stories, you could feel their emotions and their struggles; it takes you into this world in your mind where you can vividly see the characters. The other characters are also a big part of this book, and they also have their own story, but the main stars are Daisy and Billy.

I’ve read many books, and I only have a few that I enjoyed, and Daisy Jones & The Six is one of them. In this book, I was able to put myself in the character’s shoes, and I felt emotionally drained because their story is captivating. There are only a few books that make me feel a certain way, and when I do feel the emotions of the book, I know that I invested time in reading it and imagining it in my head. There are three reasons why this book is a must-read: it’s about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, about a band and their stories, and it has a bit of music, drama, and romance. Jenkins Reid did a great job with this book; it’s so good that the book is going to be a TV show. I most definitely will be reading more of Jenkins Reid’s books.
