“I’m just not the voting type. I would, but I don’t care that deeply.” Posted on October 28, 2024 by Layla Czaplewski Jordyn Krause. Photo: Layla Czaplewski With how politically tense the nation seems right now; it can be hard to imagine anyone would be able to tune out the noise. However, Jordyn Krause, a fourth-year biomedical engineering student at UWM, has been unmoved by either campaign. With a family history of political inactivity, she says she has just never been motivated to vote. Krause is among the estimated 170,000 people aged 18-24 who are not registered to vote in Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Layla Czaplewski: Have you voted before? Jordyn Krause: Nope. My uncle ran for mayor of my hometown, but I didn’t vote for him because I didn’t register in time. I would have voted for him if I had registered, but I didn’t know I would have to go in person. Czaplewski: Are you currently registered to vote? Krause: No, there’s not much motivation to. There’s a lot of work needed for that. Are you motivated by any of the top issues facing the country? Krause: No, not personally. Czaplewski: Do you have any strong opinions about the candidates? Krause: No, not really. Czaplewski: Is there anything that would motivate you to vote? Krause: I’m just not the voting type. I would, but I don’t care that deeply. No one in my family votes. Czaplewski: How do you feel about how political the nation is? Krause: They can vote, they have their opinions. I don’t care. I am Switzerland. I’m kind of glad that no one on campus has interrogated me to register yet, and I’m trying to keep it that way. Czaplewski: How did you feel about Kamala Harris visiting campus? Krause: You know, I was in my room the whole time. I wasn’t too much of a fan of how it overtook the UWM snapchat story. I don’t really walk the bridge, so I kind of just avoided the crowd. I’m glad it worked that way. Czaplewski: Anything else you want to say? Krause: No, you know I hope it works out for them, the presidents. I couldn’t even tell you who’s president right now. I would have to think about it. (after pausing for a moment) Joe Biden?
