The Effects Of Mental Health Crisis: How TO Conquer Life Obstacles

Milwaukee, Wis-  Mental health has been a very important topic that has been discussed over the past couple of years. No matter what situations that  many people go through, a lot of people in the country are affected by mental health crises.

As the winter season approaches, many people have experienced some type of depression that affects their livelihood.

Mental health is a foundational component that influences how a person thinks or reacts to their daily life.  The emotion that a person feels and allows their behavior to react in a way that they can’t control without guidance.

Physical health and mental health are deeply connected with the body’s biological process and play a significant role in childhood development. This usually transfers over to adulthood and causes severe issues of the individual and who he surrounds himself with.

In Milwaukee, one of four adults experience a mental health condition with youth reporting high rates of (52%),  depression (33.7%) and self-harm (21.7%), according to Mental Health City Milwaukee.

At its core, mental health has drawn the attention of many health professionals throughout the years. The biological factors can fluctuate throughout all stages of life.

Challenges that can range from mild stress, anxiety and severe trauma from past experiences that will lead to an individual acting a certain way towards other people.

“ After many years of battling with mental health, I had to overcome a long journey,” said UWM intramural basketball athlete Davon Jenkins. “Growing up I barely had friends to hang out with and had a very small interest in activities that I like to engage in.”

Jenkins explained how his love of sports and being physically active helped him overcome his depression and allowed him to grow.

“Once I started playing basketball, it was a way for me to express myself,” said Jenkins. “ I was able to fall in love with a sport I play everyday.”

Although athletes are very talented and motivated to succeed at their sport, the results of competitiveness can maneuver the mindset of an athlete. With a lot at stake, some athletes put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform at an elite level and if they don’t, it hinders their confidence.

This past November NFL player Jaire Alexander announced his departure from the NFL, according to NFL reports.

It appears that Alexander was focused on getting his physical and mental health right, according to ESPN insiders.

Alexander previously played for the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles.

Although Jaire has proven to be one of the league’s best defensive players, he managed to struggle the past couple of seasons mostly being a free agent.

Alexander informed the Eagles about his shocking decision before their game against the Packers in Green Bay earlier this season.

A 2019 study shows that 35% of athletes deal with mental health concerns.   Those concerns can turn into symptoms such as withdrawal from social activities, negative self-talk and decreased motivation.

“Mental health is a serious topic everyone should be aware of,” says UW-Milwaukee commuter Isaiah Darwin.  “I’ve had many situations where I wanted to take my own life and did not have a desire to embrace life.”

Darwin says that hanging out with some of his friends at UW- Milwaukee has helped him dig a hole out of a very dark tunnel.

“Before meeting new friends here, I didn’t know what to do with my life,” said Darwin.  “ I had no social life, I didn’t know what appearing in the world felt like.”

Friendship is an important factor in minimizing the depression or mental health state that a person goes through.

Having a good support system around a person in need of help is half the battle. Most people who experience a mental health crisis are a lot more steady and equipped to tackle life’s obstacles.

The support of family and friends has allowed people to not only have the support they need, but feel the love that they have never experienced for a while.

Some adults who have gone through depression as a kid have committed some act of violence or hate towards another person.

School shootings, domestic violence and homicidal crimes were on the rise heavily in the U.S in the past years.

The majority of the suspects who caused those horrific events suffered the trauma of mental health that led them to grow in a path of destruction.

The country’s mental health issues are still around and with more professional help, therapists have implemented many ways to reduce the portion of depression.
