Call Of Duty Will No Longer Release Black Ops And Modern Warfare Back To Back Posted on December 10, 2025December 10, 2025 by Luke Urback Call of Duty is set to discontinue the back-to-back releases of the popular franchise Back Ops and Modern Warfare Games, according to a press release on Call Of Duty Official website. On Dec. 9, the Call of Duty team (Treyarch, Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software) released a statement on player feedback and criticism regarding their new release, Black Ops 7. According to pcgamer, the beta feedback led the developer to loosen skill-based matchmaking for the first time ever, as well as cancel planned crossover cosmetics plans to address Call of Duty’s ugliness epidemic. Committing to “unique” games every year is a positive step, but it stops short of confronting the real source of Call of Duty fatigue: annual releases. As of now, we assume Call of Duty 23 is planned for 2026. “The Franchise has not met your expectations fully,” the Call of Duty team said. “To be very clear, we know what you expect and rest assured we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward.” The Call of Duty franchise has had a long-running history of releasing its titles back-to-back since around 2005, according to all-outgaming. The franchise has had a lot of success over that time and has only recently seen a drop in sales. The most recent entry, Black Ops 7, debuted last month to middling reviews, including our own 6/10 campaign review, 6/10 Zombies review, and significantly better 8/10 multiplayer review. Reports from IGN indicate that Black ops 7 sales are reported to be down 63% in Europe versus Battlefield 6 and down by more than 50% versus last year’s Black Ops 6 in the equivalent periods. The Call Of Duty team wants to continue to make a quality product for its playerbase and hopes to improve on its quality for the upcoming installments. “To be clear, the future of Call of Duty is very strong, and we believe our best days are ahead of us given the depth and talent of our development teams,” the Call of Duty Team said. “We have been building the next era of Call of Duty, and it will deliver precisely on what you want, along with some surprises that push the Franchise and the genre forward.” With these changes in release strategies and Call of Duty’s upcoming innovations, they are looking forward to moving forward. “We look forward to welcoming you in, listening to you, and moving forward together,” the Call of Duty team concluded.
