Panthers Stay Hot, Shut Out Wright State 4-0 for Eighth Straight Win Posted on May 17, 2026May 17, 2026 by Cody Sanchez Photo: Milwaukee Panther Athletics On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Franklin, Wisconsin, the UW-Milwaukee baseball team continued its strong late-season run with a 4-0 shutout victory over Wright State in an important conference match up. The Panthers entered the game on a seven-game winning streak and looked like a team playing with confidence from the start. Milwaukee’s pitching staff and defense controlled the game early, while the offense delivered in key moments to secure another conference win. “I think this winning streak shows our team chemistry,” Milwaukee infielder Joey Spence said before the game. “We needed to go through some struggles to start playing for each other and just have fun every day.” The game began as a defensive battle between the two teams. Milwaukee retired Wright State in order during the first inning, and the Panthers’ defense stayed sharp throughout the afternoon. In the second inning, the Raiders threatened after a leadoff double and a sacrifice fly moved a runner to third base, but Milwaukee escaped the inning without allowing a run. The Panthers continued to make routine plays in the field while their pitchers kept Wright State from building momentum offensively. Milwaukee head coach Shaun Wegner said before the game that the team has grown significantly since the beginning of the season, especially after dealing with a difficult nonconference schedule and some early struggles. “We faced a really tough schedule early,” Wegner said. “Now we’re starting to realize our potential and get to where we wanted to be.” Milwaukee finally broke through offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a leadoff double put pressure on Wright State, Charlie Marion drove in the game’s first run with an RBI double to left field. The Panthers kept the inning going when Dylan O’Connell followed with an RBI single to extend the lead. Later in the inning, Tate Schmidt added another RBI on an infield single to make it 3-0. The offensive production was another sign of Milwaukee’s improvement over the last several weeks. The Panthers have started to find more consistency at the plate while also getting stronger pitching performances. “Our offense has stepped up, and our pitchers have too,” Milwaukee player Dominic Kibler said before the game. “When our pitchers go out there and do their jobs, it gives the offense confidence.” Milwaukee added another run in the sixth inning after an infield single and stolen base created another scoring opportunity. Bradyn Horn brought home the Panthers’ fourth run with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Milwaukee more breathing room late in the game. While the offense delivered timely hits, the Panthers’ pitching staff remained the biggest difference throughout the afternoon. Wright State was never able to put together a major rally, and Milwaukee consistently came up with key outs whenever runners reached base. The Panthers also turned multiple double plays and continued to make solid defensive plays behind their pitchers. Spence said the team’s mentality against Wright State was to stay focused on playing clean baseball rather than worrying about the opponent’s reputation. “No matter who we play, we just try to play the game the right way,” Spence said. Wright State has been one of the Horizon League’s top programs for years, and Wegner acknowledged before the game that Milwaukee is trying to build toward that same level of consistency and confidence. “They expect to win every game,” Wegner said. “That’s the standard we want to build here too.” In the ninth inning, Wright State managed a two-out double, but Milwaukee quickly finished the game with a fly out to left field to complete the shutout victory. With the win, the Panthers extended their winning streak to eight games and continued building momentum at an important point in the season. After battling through adversity earlier in the year, Milwaukee now looks like a team finding its rhythm at exactly the right time.
