Fans of the boy band and Payne were left saddened by the news but the generation that grew up with the boy band’s music can’t help but return to their childhood and feel the same sorrow.

Julie Sanchez, a Junior at UW-Parkside remembers the exact time she and her entire class found out about his death and the state of shock she was in after hearing the news.

“I was in my digital storytelling class and we were all settling down when a girl behind me told her friends group that Liam Payne died,” Sanchez said. “So I went on my phone and checked the news and Liam Payne had died. I was in shock I didn’t know what to feel or what to think, I kept saying, “No way this is real.”

Sanchez recalls how quickly the news spread around the classroom. Whispers persisted about the news, leaving everyone sad, as many were fans of One Direction or grew up listening to their music.

“Eventually the whole class was talking about Liam Payne’s death and we were all just in shock because a lot of us were One Direction fans,” Sanchez said. “We couldn’t focus for the rest of class because we had that in the back of our minds. You could feel the sad environment around the classroom.”

Not only did his death bring the boy band’s fans together who have always listened to their music, especially at their peak back in 2013, but it also brought a community of those who grew up with the band.

“It was us fangirling over the boys that brought us together,” Sanchez said. “I think it’s just a really big impact, I know the community had drawn apart but this kind of brought everyone back together, back to their childhood self. I know it impacted a lot of people.”

Maia Correia-Fill, a senior at UW-Milwaukee brings up an interesting point on just how impactful his death could be to fans who are currently suffering from alcohol or substance abuse.

“I’m just like if your favorite person in the world, or the person you loved that you have a very strong or very heavy parasocial relationship with is dead now but threw himself off the top of his balcony, what does that say about dealing with your problems?”

Even though Correia-Fill wasn’t a big One Direction fan herself, she like many other fans was sad that they would never get a reunion after the band’s disbandment in 2016.

“When I first heard I was so sad because I was like I’m not a huge Liam fan, individually, I haven’t listened to a lot of his music but also I love One Direction and I know about him, I really wanted a One Direction reunion.”

Maize Billoti, a sophomore at UW-Green Bay was never a big fan of the boy band either or their members but after finding out about Payne was completely shocked even after not knowing his name.

“I was just leaving work and I had called my friend to tell her I was on my way back so we could get food and she was like, “Maize did you know Liam Pane died,” cause she knows everything about pop culture and always up to date,” Billoti said. “So I was like, “Oh my God who is Liam Payne?””

Billoti had only known about One Direction from an iCarly episode in which the boy band made a cameo back in 2012. Not knowing anything about the members, Billoti assumed that Payne was older or ill, but after hearing about the way he died, Billoti was not surprised.

“Unfortunately, a lot of pop stars and groups and bands, a lot of them suffer from alcohol and drugs and so in my head, I was like what if he was on drugs, and unfortunately might have slipped up and fallen off the balcony? It’s unfortunate but also I just didn’t know who Liam Payne was.”

A date has been set for his funeral in his hometown of Wolverhampton, England with details closed to the public. Fans have taken to TikTok to urge fans not to go and not treat the funeral as a meet and greet for other One Direction members.
