Retro Gamers Pack 8th Note Coffeehouse

Game Start. Many retro gamers gathered Friday, the 7th of November, at the 8th Note Coffee House in the Union for Retro Game Day to play their favorite Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo and PlayStation games.

Level 1. Gamers surrounded 4 T.V.s around the 8th Note, playing their timeless classic favorites including Super Smash Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Mario Party. Many embraced the friendly competition as they showcased their gaming skills in the cozy confines of a college coffee house.

Player 1. Long time gamer and 8th Note regular Don Kozinski said, “I love hanging out with my friends at the 8th Note, but I especially look forward to Retro Game Day as it is a great stress reliever during the vigors of college, and old school gaming is just awesome.”

Kozinski also said that he and his friends played for a 24-hour gaming marathon at the 8th note and raised over $800 dollars for charity.

Player 2. Another long-time gamer, Andrew Manske, who was playing against Kozinski in Super Smash Bros., said “I really think Retro Game Day is awesome at the 8th Note because, it is a chance to have fun, play the games I love and meet new people who share a common interest.”

Player 3. Matt Price volunteers at the 8th Note. He said, “I actually take off from my real job so I can volunteer and help organize Retro Game Day. Fridays are usually slow as most students don’t have classes and go to the union, but Retro Game Day combats this as business really picks up.”

Level Up! Going back to the 24-hour game marathon, the organization that represents that is known as the Milwaukee Guild. The Milwaukee Guild through video game competitions and events raises money for the Children’s Hospital.  Last year, over $64,000 in the city of Milwaukee alone was raised.

Boss Fight. In all, it is safe to say the innovation of the 8th Note will always draw students to stop by, if its music, poetry readings, or retro video games. Students say it is a must go to destination for any UWM student seeking to fill their caffeine and entertainment needs.
