Amber Bak’s grandma, Nonny, has always been a big part of her life. Amber loves stories about Nonny’s childhood and how Nonny met Pa, Amber’s grandfather. Amber learned even more when she brought home an audio recorder to interview Nonny over Thanksgiving. Yolande Melkonian immigrated to the United States with her husband in 1957 without knowing a word of English. Now widowed, she lives in Milwaukee, close to her six children and 15 grandchildren. One of them is Amanda Melkonian, who talked with her grandmother about life in Egypt and America. Sara Stern recorded her Aunt Kris and Uncle John telling how their first and only granddaughter has changed their lives.
