Brock Lesnar Appears To Retire After Wrestlemania 42 Match Vs. Oba Femi Posted on May 11, 2026May 11, 2026 by Deegan Norris Wrestlemania 42’s second night on April 19 was filled with many moments to make headlines, but nothing could compare to the weight of the opening match between Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi. The match had been built up over the previous two months on WWE’s Raw programming every Monday, with legendary manager Paul Heyman in Lesnar’s stable and insisting that no one had the courage to challenge Lesnar at the event. I don’t even have a spoiler for you. Because when Brock Lesnar and I walked through that locker room, there wasn’t one person that was man enough that I could identify that would step up and take the ass-kicking of biblical proportions that awaits them at Wrestlemania against Brock Lesnar.” On March 16, that changed when Oba Femi would confront Lesnar during a challenge by he and Heyman and performed his signature “Fall From Grace” on Lesnar before accepting the challenge. The match was chosen to open Night 2 of Wrestlemania 42 in Las Vegas and was heavily speculated by fans to be a way to put Femi “over” for the WWE Universe and usher in a new star for the company, as he had only recently been promoted to the main roster, making his debut at the Royal Rumble on January 31. A stark difference from Lesnar, who has been in professional wrestling for over two decades, debuting in WWE in 2002. The atmosphere was different for this year’s edition of a Lesnar match at Wrestlemania. As Femi made his entrance, the crowd loudly chanted his name, and he was noticeably cheered more than Lesnar when the veteran made his way to the ring. As the match began, Lesnar relied on the same strategy that had defined his career, using relentless pressure and an explosive offense, trying to end the match quickly with overwhelming force like he had successfully done for 20 years. He hit Femi with multiple German suplexes and eventually was able to perform his signature “F-5” finisher. Femi quickly recovered from the F-5, doing something barely anyone had ever done. For the first time in a long time, Lesnar did not seem to be the powerhouse he had been over the course of his dominant career. Femi quickly hit Lesnar with a chokeslam, and then performed his “Fall From Grace,” leaving Lesnar stunned. Femi proceeded to win by pinfall in only four minutes and 46 seconds and celebrated his win. Lesnar stayed in the ring after the match, however, and started to take in the atmosphere. Then, in a gesture that longtime wrestling fans instantly recognized, he removed his boots and gloves and set them down in the center of the ring. It was a quiet act, but one filled with meaning. In professional wrestling, leaving your gear in the ring has long been understood as a symbolic farewell. As Lesnar set his gear down, Paul Heyman entered the ring and the two embraced in front of the crowd. There was no dramatic speech or official confirmation in that moment; The image alone said everything. Brock Lesnar, a figure who had defined dominance for an entire era, appeared to be walking away. “I’m sad,” said wrestling fan Ace Wisniewski. “I remember him ripping up J and J Security’s Cadillac and the storylines with [John] Cena. That Cena versus Lesnar Extreme Rules match was nuts. I was a big Cena fan back in the day. Brock Lesnar was like the only wrestler that scared me as a kid.” Over the years, he became a central attraction, returning for major events and consistently being portrayed as a near-invincible force. His presence elevated every match he was part of, making him one of the most recognizable and intimidating figures in the company’s history. Lesnar chose to go out on a moment that elevated someone else. By losing to Femi, he closed his own chapter in his career, but also helped begin another. For Femi, this win changes everything. It makes him look like a serious contender for titles in the WWE and could cement him in this role for years to come. Femi already looks on the trajectory to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship that Roman Reigns had captured from CM Punk that same night. “I think tomorrow is a celebration,” Femi said in the Wrestlemania 42 post-show. “I think in the coming weeks, the establishment of a new main event player. And I think at the end of the year, the OTC can get some!” At the same time, Lesnar’s departure leaves a noticeable void. For years, he has filled a unique role in WWE as a larger-than-life attraction, someone whose appearances alone could elevate an event. WrestleMania 42 will be remembered for many reasons, but above all, it may stand as the night Brock Lesnar stepped away and allowed the future to take his place.
