Monastic life was at its pinnacle during the Middle Ages, however during the reformation of the 16th century, Martin Luther argued against monastic life, and monasteries across Protestant lands were dissolved. While there remained a strong tradition of monasteries in the Catholic and Orthodox faith, this tradition slowly faded as society was secularized during early modernity and ecclesiastical lands were seized. In this short documentary, Nathan Brown shows us how it’s like to be a monk in the 21st century.
