Why The James Comey Testimony Should Lead To Donald Trump’s Impeachment

Little over a month after President Donald Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey, questions remain about the president’s ties to the Russian Government during the past presidential election. Comey’s highly anticipated appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee last Thursday has left many Americans, including myself, wondering if the former director’s testimony should lay the foundation for impeachment proceedings against President Trump. The fact that Americans have to question whether their president was anyway involved with the Russian Government during an election is alarming.Compile that information with President Trump’s Nixonesque firing of the man directly in charge of investigating the Russian influence of the U.S. Presidential Election is precisely the reason why impeachment proceeding must start immediately.

We cannot in good conscience allow a man as irrational and compulsive as President Trump to continue to jeopardize the American way of life. His uncharacteristic behavior and lack of presidential demeanor only leaves more questions than answers, and President Trump’s decision to fire James Comey only solidifies a need for impeachment. In the history of the United States, three sitting United States Presidents have faced the possibility of impeachment. The House of Representatives impeached only two presidents, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, yet the United States Senate would ultimately acquit both. The third president, Richard Nixon, was only spared impeachment due to his resignation from office. The impending impeachment of Donald Trump must go further.

Former Director Comey’s testimony regarding his firing is exactly why a hard look into the impeachment of President Trump is necessary. “So it confused me when I saw on television the president saying that he actually fired me because of the Russia investigation and learned, again, from the media that he was telling, privately, other parties that my firing had relieved great pressure on the Russia investigation.”

The simple fact the President Trump was concerned about the pressure placed on him during the Russian investigation clearly shows a man who manipulated his power, as he knew Director Comey was close to exposing him. President Trump’s erratic choice to fire Comey during an ongoing investigation is perhaps the most convincing piece of evidence in what should be an impeachment trial.

The next and perhaps most damning issue I see with President Trump is the fact that he required “loyalty” from Director Comey. The fact that Comey was literally working on an investigation into Russian interference into the election and possible ties to some in Trump’s campaign makes the notion of absolutely loyalty to the president is absurd. The fact that Comey himself chose to adhere to the standards of the FBI and pursue an investigation into the president’s people, which may have ultimately led to his firing, clearly highlights some misdeeds from President Trump.

However, despite the fact that President Trump seems doomed for inevitable impeachment, his supporters continue to believe in him. The President continues to refute the claims of his colluding with Russian Officials and maintains his innocence. The Twittering President even responded to Director Comey’s testimony by saying, “I believe the James Comey leaks will be far more prevalent than anyone ever thought possible. Totally illegal? Very cowardly!” The very fact President Trump has maintained his rigorous Twitter habit well into his presidency continues to allow his supporters an unprecedented look into a sitting president’s mind. His supporters continue to view Trump as the hardworking, no nonsense, stick a boot up your ass president that he so clearly is not. Sentiments range from “Keep Fighting the Good Fight,” to an assuring tweet from Geraldo Rivera himself the president has a 0% chance of being impeached.

The egotistical President’s brash and unorthodox behavior that has captured the hearts of many of his supporters is sure to lead to his eventual downfall and impeachment. As soon as President Trump decided to assert himself as America’s hero and removed Director Comey from his position in order to clear his own name, President Trump assured impeachment in his very near future.

Unfortunately, President Trump has history on his side and no United States President has ever been removed from office by impeachment. So I propose the president takes the Richard Nixon route and continue to maintain his innocence while eloquently removing himself from the White House. As American citizens, we should continue to allow President Trump to portray these sentiments and enjoy the freedom of impeachment while serving time in a federal prison.
