Keep Families Together [OPINION] Posted on July 5, 2018 by Jennifer Yaccarino June was Immigrant Heritage Month and America celebrated it in the best way possible. If you haven’t paid any attention to the news, you definitely missed all of the great things that have been done this past month. Yesterday, all across the United States, numerous rallies were held to protest Trump’s immigration policies. This was a hopeful end to such a successful Immigration Heritage Month. Over 700 different rallies were held nationwide. Trump’s administration has been in the hot seat because of its immigration policies. From the beginning, people were split on the “build the wall” slogan that was the centerpiece of his campaign. The United States has developed a zero-tolerance immigration policy. The current process for becoming a citizen is a lengthy process that takes numerous years and refugees coming into the United States are actually seen as illegal immigrants. Those coming into the United States at our southern border are met by federal authorities who detain anyone who is crossing the border “illegally.” There have been numerous stories circulating about children being separated from their families and put into detention centers. Amongst the incredible citizen support were numerous celebrities who spoke of the importance of changing this policy. Notable appearances included Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, and their two children, along with America Ferrera and Alicia Keys. Bernie Sanders stating that “the United States of America must never be about tearing apart families” joined in on the movement. Nancy Pelosi joined in saying “helpless, caged children *still* don’t know if they’ll ever see their mothers again” joined in. This is only the beginning, but support for the Families Belong Together movement only seem to be growing.
