Joe Biden Elected 46th President of the United States, Media Calls Say Posted on November 19, 2020November 19, 2020 by Noah Osen Five days into the 2020 presidential election, the protracted race was called in favor of the Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris by news media outlets. President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris will be inaugurated into office on Jan. 20, 2021. Regardless of this projected outcome, President Donald Trump has yet to concede the election, and is seeking legal action to assess the possibility of fraudulent votes and counting techniques. States took far longer than usual to count votes because there was an overwhelming number of mail-in ballots cast amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of election night, odds were in favor of President Donald Trump earning a second term in the White House. He controlled a majority of battleground states, including Wisconsin and Michigan. Biden maintained a slight edge when it came to Electoral College votes with 210 to President Trump’s 166. Overnight, a paradigm shift occurred in the Midwest, as absentee ballots in Milwaukee County propelled Biden into the lead for Wisconsin. Democratic candidates have not made Wisconsin a priority in recent elections, as President Trump turned it red in 2016, which was unique because President Barack Obama controlled the state in both of his campaigns. Wisconsin State Assembly staff members were not entirely shocked by the boost for Biden in Dane and Milwaukee counties. “We held a strong belief that there would be a positive transition in numbers for Joe Biden once the majority of absentee ballots were counted in high-population areas like Madison and Milwaukee,” said Democratic Wisconsin State Assembly Legislative Assistant Michael Lindvall. The outcome of this year’s presidential election hinged on states like Wisconsin and Michigan that were won by the Trump campaign in 2016. Voters in swing states were considerably more decisive in terms of supporting Biden this go-around, as opposed to Hillary Clinton four years ago. As the week progressed, Biden continued to clean up in battleground areas like Pennsylvania and Arizona. The Biden/Harris campaign earned its victory on Saturday, Nov. 7 when Nevada was called by news outlets in the early afternoon. Its six Electoral College votes were enough for Biden to surpass the 270 needed to claim Presidency over the next four years. Despite the presidential election being decided by a margin of 58 Electoral College votes in favor of President-Elect Joe Biden, sitting President Donald Trump has refused to concede, and is claiming that foul play factored into the outcome. Members of the Virginia Democrats were not appalled by President Trump’s actions following his early exit from office. I reached out to a diligent canvasser about the President’s actions. “We knew full well heading into this election that Trump would leave The White House kicking and screaming if he lost,” said John O’Donoghue of the Virginia Democrats. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris haven’t missed a step early on in their transition to office, and are focusing on a plan to help eradicate COVID-19 in the United States once they assume position in the District of Columbia.
