Is There Too Much Star Wars? [OPINION]

Another year, another myriad of Star Wars content for us nerds to lose our minds over. Since it’s resurgence in 2015 with the release of The Force Awakens, Star Wars has been basically everywhere every year releasing new movies, tv shows, video games it’s just a never-ending cycle of Star Wars. Now for fanboys like myself, I’m ok with this as I’m one of the idiots who actually liked The Last Jedi and Solo and even still regularly plays Battlefront 2. But for many others, it just isn’t the same and many are worried we are getting a little too much Star Wars, and it’s not hard to see why many people think that.

It’s worth mentioning that Disney is very aware of this kind of Star Wars fatigue and after the release of Rise of Skywalker they do plan on taking a bit of a hiatus from Star Wars. But there are still a ton of Star Wars content planned for the future including an entirely new trilogy as if 9 movies weren’t enough. I was talking to my father who was around when the original Star Wars trilogy released, and he was reminiscing about when these movies only came out every few years which made each one so special. Now he feels like there is just so much that he can’t keep up which in turn has made him lose interest. But my father is also someone who is still waiting for Avatar 2 so take that as you will. However, I get his point as it’s almost impossible to escape Star Wars these days and now with the arrival of Disney plus it’s even more in our faces than ever.

Before you say it, yes, the Mandolorian is awesome and is the best Star Wars show since the Clone Wars but again how much is too much? There are multiple new Star Wars shows planned for the future including a show about Obi-Wan Kenobi, General Grevious, and a prequel to Rogue One. So it’s safe to say there will be no shortage of Star Wars content for the next few years. But do we really need all of this, did people really ask for all of this, I can’t speak for all of the Star Wars fans around the world but I certainly am overwhelmed.

I’m not sure if I can handle 3 more movies and all of these tv shows I mean I will most certainly make an effort but who knows. It’s almost an investment to see Star Wars with movie tickets and monthly fees for Disney plus but according to the numbers, this hasn’t stopped anyone, yet. A lot of critics said the same thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its early days but yet here we are 21 films later and people are still rushing to the theaters to see the newest Marvel film. Hell Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing movie of all time, if that doesn’t scream worldwide interest I don’t know what does.

In a perfect world Rise of Skywalker goes on to gross a billion dollars and the desire for more Star Wars is still felt and we continue to get content. Worst case scenario it flunks and Disney has to start from scratch or just drop it completely. I’m not a fortune teller so there’s no way of knowing what will happen until it does but as a fan, I do genuinely hope to see the franchise to succeed and keep on going until I can’t physically get myself to the theater.
