MKE falls to Big 10 Iowa

UWM Baseball drops home game against Hawkeyes

FRANKLIN, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team was not able to win as the Big 10 bats had a big day.

The Milwaukee Panthers (11-4 overall) scored two runs in the fourth inning as Hausser walked, scoring Chapman, and a sacrifice by Benson to score DeYoung. It wouldn’t be enough as Iowa only would allow two hits through nine innings.

Pitcher Logan Schulfer pitched 0.1 innings allowing six runs in the top of the first inning with 3 hits, walking four players.

The Panthers earned two hits through nine innings; Nick DeYoung earned a base hit (1-for-2). Nathan Ebersol had one base hit in the game (1-for-2). It wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth when DeYoung singled and then advanced around bases to score.

Iowa scored six early runs in the first inning. Sam Peterson (2-for-4) with a two-RBI double, Kyle Huckstorf (1-for-3) walked scoring Izaya Fullard, Ben Tallman (2-for-3) also hit a two-RBI double to left-center, Michael Seggers (2-for-5) walked scoring Huckstorf from third making it a 6-0 ballgame at the bottom of the first inning.

The Hawkeyes (17-12) kept scoring throughout the game, at the top of the sixth inning Keaton Anthony (1-2) hit a three-RBI home run to left field and the score would show 13-2 at the top of the sixth.

Brett McCleary (1-2) also homered in the top of the ninth inning to left-center making it a 16-2 game.

Despite the loss, pitcher Andrew Neu worked through one inning. He threw one strikeout, hit a batter, and only allowed one hit.

The winds today were strong, does that affect how you play?

“Yeah, I think that can play a part for sure. From a pitching perspective when it’s really windy blowing across the field it makes your hands really slick and tough to grip the ball. It can also cause your pitchers to move more, sometimes that’s good. Sometimes that’s bad. Just depends on what you throw really. Any ball put in the air by a hitter hit to the left the ball will have a lot of extra carry and if you hit it to the right, it will get killed. It can also make it tough for fielders to catch pop-ups and fly balls.”

What did the coach say to the team after the game, how should you guys improve for the next game?

“We are in this together. We have each other’s back and pick each other up. Facing adversity is something we are going to have to do, and the best part of baseball is you get a fresh start every day and we can flip the script like that. A little confidence and we can pick up where we were. We have a talented team, and we can make some noise if we believe in each other.

So, today you were supposed to play at American Family Field but it got postponed until a further date. As a baseball player in college, what does it mean to play there?

“Personally, it’s a dream come true. Growing up as a dedicated brewer’s fan, this is something you dream of. Playing at any big-league field is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but AmFam field specifically is incredible and makes me very grateful for the opportunities I have had playing college baseball.

Milwaukee goes on the road for a three-game series against Youngstown State. The next game is Apr. 14

“We are going to look at all the things we did wrong and emphasize those for our next game, just come back strong and just try not to repeat the mistakes we’ve been making, but I don’t think the scoreboard reflected how we really played, but I know we’ve got to be better, “ said Andrew Neu.
