Students gathered before the UWM Men’s Basketball ESPN Bracket Buster game versus Fairfield University at the U.S. Cellular Arena at 3 p.m, with their future careers on in sight.

The UWM athletic department showcased the 1st ever Panthers Sports Career Fair on February 18. This event for UWM students was created to give them an opportunity to meet and visit with representatives from local, regional and national sports organizations. Organizations in the field of public relations, communications, marketing and broadcasting attended in the hope of meeting their employees and interns of the future. In attendance at the career fair were the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers, ESPN 540 Radio, Milwaukee Wave, Wisconsin PGA and Milwaukee Wave to name a few.

UWM senior student and Corporate Sales Assistant Mike Rosenberg coordinated the Panther Sports Career Fair. The career fair also showcased a sports education symposium, which allowed students to ask career questions and gauge interest from the employers. Rosenberg said, “I thought it was a great success with 11 venders attending and one graduate school. All the employees in attendance thought it was a great event.” 157 tickets were sold for the event at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

Tyler Olsen, a UWM junior business student attended in hope of finding a summer internship. Olsen said, “ I was able to meet with the New York Yankees Class A affiliate from Stanton Island and felt they were intrigued by my background in minor league baseball.”

Wisconsin State Golf Association Director of Member Services David Cohn and also a UWM student himself, was on hand representing the WSGA. Located in West Allis, The WSGA was in the process of looking for a summer intern. Cohn said, “The biggest thing we are looking is not only a golf background, but the ability for candidates to showcase their unique skills and be reliable.”

The Milwaukee Wave was on hand advertising its summer internship program. Director of Client Relations and Game Operations for the Wave Leah Toohey spoke on behalf of the Wave on what their internship program entitled saying, “ We usually hire around 15-20part-time interns for each summer, who work on advertising the Wave brand and reaching out to the community.”

The Panther Career Event required a $20 prepaid registration fee, $10 for current UWM students. With registration for the fair, all attendees were granted free admission to the UWM Basketball game with reserved corner lower level seating and  $6 food voucher at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The fair ran about two hours leading up to tip off of the UWM verses Fairfield game and drew over 150 UWM Students. In the end, the UWM Men’s Basketball team prevailed beating the Fairfield Stags, 67 to 63.
