Media Milwaukee Journalists Win 9 Press Club Awards

Media Milwaukee student journalists at UW-Milwaukee have won 9 Milwaukee Press Club awards in multiple categories, including an award for best college news site.

That means Media Milwaukee student journalists have won 30 awards in three different prestigious contests since last fall alone.

The MPC Awards for Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Competition received hundreds of entries for the contest from news organizations and individuals throughout Wisconsin.

Winning entries include four student audio stories from JAMS 204 class, a student investigative story from JAMS 500 class about the risks of spray tanning, and student campus beat coverage from JAMS 320 class on the UW budget cuts.

Among the winners: Student Jonathan Powell won an award for The Ageless Man, his poignant story about a local Holocaust survivor, and student Jakayla Phillips won for her audio story on the aftermath of her brother’s tragic death.

“The competition was judged by professional journalists and journalism scholars from across the country, from San Diego to Syracuse to Alaska to Florida, with the judges expressing pleasure at the high quality of work done by Wisconsin journalists,” according to the Press Club.

Finalists will not know whether they have won a gold, silver or bronze award until the final results are announced and the winners are honored at the May 13 Gridiron Awards Dinner at the InterContinental Hotel in Milwaukee.

The awards come on the heels of Media Milwaukee’s numerous wins in recent Wisconsin Collegiate Media Association and Society of Professional Journalists’ contests.
