Behind the Pink Door, Journey Through Time in the Vintage Sanctuary Posted on May 15, 2024November 17, 2024 by Summer Fisher Photos: Summer Rae Fisher Below the busy city streets, there’s a secret spot behind a bright pink door that is filled with old treasures from the past. It’s not just a shop; it’s like a special time machine where everything tells a story. From old t-shirts to fancy high heels, each item has a story to tell amidst the underground ambiance, accompanied by funky melodies. This hidden place feels like stepping back in time, where people care about old things. The owners aren’t just selling stuff; they’re like memory keepers. The store was once just a “pipe dream” for its owner, a passion project that was born from a love for all things vintage. Now, a cozy haven where the past is brought alive, offering the public for those who are seeking to get away from modernity. This underground sanctuary invites everyone to indulge in the lasting allure of old-fashioned style. Tom Connolly and Melissa Padavich are a dynamic duo with a shared passion for preserving the past, named their underground retreat “Handsome Hound”, after the passing of their cherished German short-haired pointer, whose recent passing inspired them to create a space where cherished memories can live on through the treasures that the married couple collects and shares. “The goal is to be ourselves, have fun, and hopefully, people like it,” said Owner Tom Connolly. With vibrant excitement, the owners recently installed new signage in front of “Handsome Hound,” their store has been evolving and thriving for a year and three months now. The owners eagerly showcase their curated vintage items at markets throughout the year, including popular venues like Art Bar and Bay View Bash. Connecting with patrons who also appreciate the timeless charm of their collection. “These are all recycled clothes; if they don’t sell we use them as rags,” said Connolly. “I hate the idea of cheap new stuff constantly cycling in and out; it’s gross. Older stuff is better and cooler anyway.” Sustainability is super important because it means using things carefully now so there’s still enough for people later. Vintage shops are a big part of this because they recycle old stuff instead of always making new things, which saves resources and stops garbage from piling up. When we shop at vintage stores, we’re helping the Earth by being smart about how we use things, making sure they last longer and don’t hurt the environment. The owners are still settling into their store but they’re already dreaming big with plans that might include expanding into a bigger space in Bloomington, IN in the city where Tom went to college. With their shared commitment to sustainability and admiration for the past, Tom and Melissa are not just shaping a business but they’re building a legacy, a vintage treasure at a time. As their journey forward they aspire to embrace their authenticity, enjoy every moment, and spread their love for vintage clothing for all who step foot through the vibrant pink entrance of the “Handsome Hound”.
