On The Edge Bar & Grill

In the mood for some local thin crust pizza and some bar fried food? This is your place to go. Unless you know where it is, or possibly have heard about it, it is an easy place to miss. The small little bar and grill is attached to the Southridge Athletic Club, behind Southridge mall on 68th and Edgerton. There is not much signage pointing you in the direction, but underneath the large Athletic Club sign, you will see the sign for On the Edge Bar and Grill.

The little place, located in Greenfield WI was recently renamed, formerly known as Jimmy K’s Bar & Grill. The new name, “On the Edge” came from the literal fact that it is on the edge. Half of the parking lot is considered Greendale, where the building itself is considered to be Greenfield. The restaurant carries a variety of food but is known for its Pizza and American cuisine.

The restaurant itself is a good mix between a cozy family area with tables and arcade games for the kids, and a raised bar area with big TV’s that had the different sports games playing. If you’re wondering if the pizza is as good as people say it is, I am here to tell you that it is indeed. The restaurant targets locals but really tries to bring in a new crowd with their “best pizza in Greenfield and Greendale.” With another big known thin crust pizza restaurant less than 3 miles away, On the Edge pulls away and elevates themselves by offering a variety of food choices.

Last Sunday, my mom and I decided to make the trip to this well-known local restaurant to check out their famous specialty pizzas. The restaurant was pretty busy, but the bartender said it was a quiet Sunday since the Packers weren’t playing. The restaurant seems to be very cleaned and well kept. The high-top wooden tables, and velvet red carpets along with velvet barstools had me feeling like I was in the 1980’s comedy, Cheers. Especially when people walked in and everyone knew their name! The decorations fit the time of year and were not too much for the older look that the restaurant has. I am guessing their purpose was to use the fall decorations as a home-like feel for their guests that come there to watch the games and spend time with family.

Overall service was phenomenal. We were greeted fairly quickly by the bartender and shortly after she took our drinks and order. You could tell that she was a favorite, very friendly and all the people at the bar really seemed to like her. The way she carried herself was respectable and she had an excellent presence to her. Dress attire seemed very casual, as our bartender was in tennis shoes with jeans and a nicer shirt, nothing fancy but definitely appropriate for the scene. To me, good service is just being attentive and understanding to your guests. Overall, she did a great job of that, even while she was busy with her other customers at the bar and what seemed to be a party in the back, she always made time to check on us.

The wait time was quick, only about ten minutes after she took our order it was no time before we got our appetizer, just like a restaurant should. We started by ordering their Wonton Wrapped Mozzarella Sticks ($6). You got five of them, which I felt was more than enough. The sticks were huge mozzarella cheese sticks that and came in a little green basket, with a checkered colored lining, a side of marinara sauce and topped with some shredded mozzarella cheese. I thought the presentation for the sticks were simple and made sense for the bar that it was. After the first bite, I knew they were good. The cheese melted in your mouth and the crunchiness from the wonton wrapper was done perfectly. The marinara sauce was the perfect temperature to dip into, not too hot and not cold.

Next, we ordered a Monterey Chicken Wrap with a side of fries ($8). The descriptions said you got the choice of fried chicken or grilled, either on a wrap or sandwich with lettuce, bacon, your choice of cheese and ranch. I thought this was nice that you got options and were not stuck with one thing. The wrap was tasty and had a good flavor to it. I could see a lot of people ordering this! The fried chicken was rich and flavorful and the bacon inside was crispy. Also, on the wrap was shredded cheese, lettuce, and ranch. I thought overall the display and taste was great. The wrap and fries came out on a big white dinner plate, and the wrap was nicely cut in half which made it very easy to eat. The fries were a normal cut, seasoned in an average fry seasoning but done perfectly.

Lastly, we ordered the On the Edge Special pizza ($16.50) size small. The small was a 14” topped with sausage, mushroom, and onions. The bartender told us that this was the most popular pizza and what really draws people in with their Milwaukee style: thin, hard crust and served into squares. The cheese was golden, and the crust looked a little chalky. The sausage was great and had a very Italian rich taste to it. The pizza itself had a nice oven flavor to it, but that didn’t overpower from the veggies, which were the perfect size. The mushrooms and onions you could tell were really fresh and full of flavor. The three toppings really went well together. I now know why this is a customer favorite! While devouring our pizza, the atmosphere was very fitting, with guys cheering for the basketball team in the background and families laughing on the other end of the dining room.

Overall, this restaurant visit was a very pleasant experience. The menu is not huge but does have a wide variety of offerings from sandwiches, to burgers and they even have a fish fry. I felt like the price was very reasonable and inexpensive for the amount and quality of food you received. I would highly recommend stopping in for a bite to eat next time you are in the Greenfield area or even after a shopping trip at Southridge mall. There are plenty of restaurants around the area, but this hidden gem really has some of the best pizza in town.
