‘I think people should speak up, especially those with privilege and with mass followings.’

Marie Miller.

Marie Miller, 19, is a second-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, born in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. She is passionate about politics and what is going on in the world today. Miller has gained a lot of perspective especially on ICE in the U.S. over the past couple months.

Isabelle Doyle: What are your thoughts on ICE?

Marie Miller: I do not support ICE in the slightest, they are tearing away families, profiling people, taking children. All of these families are being torn apart, they are not doing any good for our country.

Doyle: Following up on that, what are your thoughts on the Trump administration sending ICE officers to cities throughout the U.S.?

Miller: I think it is not ok, it is a waste of our resources and money. This money and resources could be used elsewhere. When ICE is sent to these cities they are in unmarked vehicles and going in with masks on.

Doyle: Again following on the entire situation in Minnesota, what do you think about what ICE has been doing to the protesters throughout Minneapolis?

Miller: I don’t think the officers are handling it well. They are breaking so many rules and not handing it morally. They have all been peaceful protests and they have had many deaths due to ICE violently attacking these peaceful protesters. It is a right of ours to speak our minds and share our opinions, peacefully.

Doyle: What do you think American citizens should do about ICE?

Miller: I think people should speak up, especially those with privilege and with mass followings. Even if you are a regular citizen without a mass following online you can show up by going to protests, supporting campaigns that fight against ICE, getting out and voting, and spreading the word to those around you.

Doyle: It has also been recently reported throughout cities in the United States that they are preparing for ICE to come into their city. What are your thoughts on that?

Miller: I think that cities should be preparing for ICE to be coming and they should alert people when they are coming, so that people can be prepared if ICE was to come to their home, their school, to their work.

Doyle: Do you have anything else you would like to share?

Miller: I do. I think that everyone needs to get out there and vote. I also think that ICE needs more restrictions if not fully abolished. I think that it has gone way too far and they are not handling it appropriately. Leaders need to prepare their cities and citizens. If ICE comes, they need to be prepared on what to do, how to handle it, what to say, and that citizens have the right to refuse.
