Jacqueline Barlas, 18, is a freshman engineering major from Door County, Wis., who recently moved to Milwaukee to attend college. The city is a big change, but she is embracing the transition. This presidential election will be Barlas’ first time voting, and she knows it’s an important decision.

Isabella Meier: What are your thoughts on this upcoming election?

Jacqueline Barlas: I think it’s hopeful. I think the candidates are questionable at times, but there’s definitely hope.

Meier: Will you be voting in this upcoming election? Why?

Barlas: Yes, I will be voting. Voting is important, especially for young people. It’s for a big generation and can make change.

Meier: As a woman, why are you voting for who you are voting for?

Barlas: I am voting for Kamala Harris because she will help protect my reproductive rights, and I align with her views.

Meier: Do you wish there were different candidate options, and why?

Barlas: Yes, I do. At times I wish there was someone a little more moderate than Kamala. However, I think her being a woman of color is good for this country and forward-thinking.

Meier: What values are important to you, and how do they relate to the person you will be voting for?

Barlas: As I said earlier, reproductive rights are really important to me. I think Kamala has progressive thinking in this country, which is what we need. I also think she’s a respectful candidate, and she speaks well and can hear other people’s opinions.

Meier: Do you consider yourself a Democrat or a Republican, and what views make you choose one side or the other?

Barlas: I would say I’m definitely more Democratic, definitely more on the left. I’m very passionate about reproductive rights and women’s rights for everyone and equality, so yeah, definitely a Democrat.
