Disney vs. Netflix and Nickelodeon: Is It a Good Idea? [OPINION]

Ever since Disney announced that they would have their app with their shows and networks they own, everybody cannot stop talking about it. Now, Netflix is partnering up with Nickelodeon to create spin-off shows and more. It seems as though that there is a rivalry cooking up between Disney Plus and Nickelodeon.

Disney Plus is a dream come true for those who grew up watching their shows and films, such as Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, That’s So Raven, Lizzie McGuire, Marvel Films, Star Wars Films, and much more. These shows are nostalgic for Disney fans because it brings back memories of all the shows and movies we have watched, and it’s like a piece of our childhood came back. We are now able to stream our favorites anytime and anywhere; this could not get any better.

Also, Disney Plus’s subscription is $6.99 a month for four accounts with no commercials. In contrast, Netflix’s highest subscription is $15.99 a month for four accounts with no ads. Netflix is excellent, but they don’t have all of the shows and movies that Disney now offers and its family-friendly rating up to pg-13.

When Disney launched its app on November 12th, Netflix ended up announcing the next day that they will be partnering up with Nickelodeon. Was this shade? Most will say yes, and most will say no, but to agree and disagree, this was shade. Disney owns a lot of networks like ESPN, Hulu, Fox, etc., they have money pouring in all directions. Of course, Netflix must feel like they are up against them, they both were getting the money together, but now Netflix doesn’t have them by their side.

Announcing that they are partnering up with Nickelodeon is a good idea because since they don’t have Disney anymore. They do need another network that will help them make and bring shows, but most importantly, a network that will bring money. Nickelodeon is also a TV network that a lot of people like, but it’s sad to say that no one will out beat Disney. Not saying that they won’t do good together because we still don’t know what their plans are in shows and film-wise. But in a money sense, they will struggle because Disney has a lot of things for them; they own two of the most popular franchises which are Marvel and Star Wars.

Netflix and Nickelodeon did bring a show called “Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.” This was a popular show back then, and they made it into a movie on Netflix. If they continue doing this with old popular shows from the ’90s, they should be good. And if they want more people to tune into their network, they should consider adding past Nickelodeon shows, like The Rugrats, Cat and Dog, Hey Arnold, etc. These are shows that a lot of also grew up watching, and if they want to get our attention, then they must find a way to do so.

The rivalry between Disney and Netflix is real because they were partners for the longest. Then Disney decided to part ways and not be partners with Netflix. The awkward thing about it is that there were some shows that they partnered with, but they are under Netflix. Marvel films were added into Netflix, and they created plays that revolve around Marvel, called “Defenders.” It seems as though that Disney Plus might bring back the “Defenders” shows that were canceled, but this won’t happen until 2020.

Both Disney and Netflix still have some ties that connect them, and this can get messy. It’s good that Netflix and Nickelodeon are partnering up because they are in the talks about creating shows of existing Nickelodeon characters and even creating new characters. Though it might seem easy to pull anything that is Disney owned and related out of  Netflix, there are contract renewals that might be hard for Disney to keep or for Netflix to keep as well fully. They seem to know what they want, but they are also trying to compensate for having more kids, family-friendly shows, and films since Disney is out and has its app.
