The America For the Chosen

It seems that in the America that we all currently inhabit that there is a different catastrophe each day. From an escalating trade war to political uncertainty, it has been hard to keep track of what is even going on anymore. This week however was a different story. Journalists have been reporting non-stop coverage of the events that have been taking place at the border of Mexico and the United States. There are reports of migrant families being transported to heavily guarded facilities when attempting to cross the border. Children are being ripped apart from their parents, unknown where they may be going or what may happen to them. Is it wrong for President Trump to create such a policy that creates such injustice for these families for the sake of America’s protection? It is wrong for the administration to separate these families from not only an ethical perspective but a moral one as well.

While he did in fact sign an executive order to halt the separation of families at the border, the policy was created under his administration which means he could have prohibited this from happening in the first place. Another reason for why the executive order was not necessary was that he has the ability to end the separation by a simple phone call since it was his policy that allowed such acts to be taken place.

While the executive order is in place, there is a trend when it comes to the actions of the Trump administration. A policy is created which usually results in public outcry. Then the President puts a temporary fix on the matter but then slowly reenacts the policy behind closed doors while the public is settling down. This connection can refer to the immigration ban that took place earlier in his presidency with slight adjustments made.

With all of this happening, we look to Congress to fix these changes. Currently, the House of Representatives is dominantly Republican and has a tendency to defend the president’s actions due to their political affiliation with the party. Unfortunately, they are the only means of passing any laws that would instill a permanent ban on separating families from the borders.

This does not mean that the republican party is in favor of the separation of families by any means. The counter argument for the separation is that it allows agents who are working at the border to be more thorough with their searches and indictments. This also grants more safety and stability to an escalating situation that is arising at the border.

With all said, the board has reached a unanimous decision that there is a clear problem that is taking place and needs to be addressed and resolved. The board firmly believes that family separation is not a necessary action by any means and must be concluded permanently. While Congress has been debating back and forth over what actions need to be taken on the matter, a decision needs to be made soon before more children are sent to an isolated camp away from their mothers and fathers.
